North-South Trail Thru Hike // Backpacking 60 Miles Across The Land Between The Lakes
I've watched this several times already and will probably be singing it to raise our spirits the next time we're trudging through the mud on the PMT. A major contribution to the legend of Pine Mountain! I'm so glad to see that everyone else is enjoying this as much as I am. It brings together all of your talents in a way that captures the essence of Pine Mountain. It really came together well. The recording sounds great, the color grading fits the mood of the song and the trip, and you nailed the troubles we faced on that hike. I was actually starting to think about doing the PMT again until you reminded me how difficult this trip was 😅 0:32 It took me several viewings to realize you can see us standing on the ridge in this shot! 1:42 I love this shot of me and Nick and our weary satisfaction. 2:00 So much stuff happened during this trip that I forget that the first section (with the caves and arches) was the same trip as the rest of it. 2:32 Nice catch on the old wheel. I don't remember seeing it. Great image. 3:25 I love how the mountain looks in this shot. 3:40 This is probably my favorite shot/lyric combination in the whole video. I still have nightmares about that rhododendron hell. 4:15 Nice night-lapse! Is this the first night? 4:33 This shot says it all. It makes me shiver and hurt just looking at it. Very accurate portrayal of the last day, haha. 4:30 Knights of the Satchel! 6:15 Your sacrifice in getting this shot really paid off. It did not disappoint. Part of me wanted to stay up on the tower all night and watch darkness fall over the mountains, so I'm very glad you gave me an opportunity to see it. 6:45 All the drone shots are great, but I especially like the cloud shots, and how the video is bookended by us leaving/entering the clouds. Perfect ending! Thank you for putting all of this together. Your work really paid off, because this turned out better than I could have imagined. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do next, and to more time on the trail together! Cheers, brother!
LOVED THIS! I've been taking a winter hiking vacation in the Mount Rogers area for the last decade. I didn't get to go this winter. So great to see my "happy place" in the cold, snowy conditions I'm used to. Until winter comes, this wonderful footage will inspire and tide me over. :)
I am so glad you were able to find my video to get to see the winter views from this year to hold you over until next time! It's a wonderful place, I cannot wait to go back! Thanks for watching!
...well done...
Thanks for watching!
Pine mountain is definitely on my bucket list
I hope you can go visit sometime! It’s awesome!
Amazing. Moving. Beautiful in song, lyrics, and photography. I will replay often to feel the mountain. This ballad belongs. I’m thankful for your talents and endurance that enable these echoes of your deep connection with the mountain. This is great! Keep on keepin on.
You comment is as beautifully written as the views of Pine Mountain are! Thanks for this, Senator - you are closer in heart and spirit to those mountains than I am hailing from B-ville, so it means a lot to hear how much you resonated with the words, notes, and frames. May the mountain always be there for us and our descendants to revel in! Shine on and Klondoogie, Amen!
Great video of one of my favorites places to backpack.
Thanks for watching! It was a trip of a lifetime in those conditions!
Awesome stuff! As Nick said; HOME RUN 👌
Thanks so much, OO! We need to get you down here to experience the magic of Pine Mtn! I bet you could make a masterpiece with your film/editing style!
@@BluegrassBackcountry That would be great! Definitely need to link up with you guys sometime.
This is wonderful! Very Isakov sounding. Love it!
Thanks for watching!! I just went and saw Isakov in concert this past Sunday in Louisville, he’s my favorite! (The guitar I used is the same model he plays, if that tells you how big of a fan I am of him haha).
@@BluegrassBackcountry Nice! I’m very happy smokeybees shared this.
RUclips actually recommended this to me! 😮 Great job!
Hey hey, that’s awesome! The YT algorithm smiles upon me for once. Thanks for watching!!
Samuel!!! This is amazing!! The song goes perfectly with the video and you sound so good. I’m going to need you to do this more often!
Thanks so much, Amy!! I really tried to put all those pieces together, so it means a lot to hear from those I know (and don’t know) who really connected with it. I’ve got lots of other original songs I need to pull out of the woodwork and put them to some footage that’s just collecting dust, so I may just have to do that! Thanks again!😊
I watch all of your guy's videos, but man I love this one a lot! You really captured Pine Mountain really well!
Thanks so much, Tim! It means a lot to connect with regular viewers. This project took a long time for me to finish so I was getting pretty fed up with it, so I’m elated to hear so many people are enjoying it!
Chills! My moonshine-making-outlaw-Pine Mtn ancestors would approve 😉 and so do I. Enjoyed this so much.
Thanks so much for your kind words! I’m glad to hear the song resonated with you. I’m not a native Eastern Kentuckian, but I hope my travels across that rugged mountain has at least gotten me an honorary badge haha! If I could live closer to there, I totally would! Thanks again!
BRUH!!!!! HOME RUN with this one! That was some epic footage, and I loved the color! We'll chat later about that! Dang, bro! Loved it! I can't believe it's been over a year since we had that trip! Your song captured the soul of the mountain!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks brother!! I’m interested to hear your thoughts on the color grading, hopefully it was a good thing haha! I had to do a double take when I was looking for the dates of that trip, just seemed like it was a few months ago. Pine Mountain has our hearts forever! 💙
What a beautiful song about someplace so significant to you and the “trail tribe”! You have cut your hiking teeth so to speak on this mountain ❤. The melody is perfect with the lyrics and the footage you put with the video😊You never cease to amaze me with your God given talents🙌🏻 Proud of you ! Love you!
Thanks so much, Mom! If I could hike only there for the rest of my life and I wouldn’t run out of things to see and adventures to have at Pine Mountain! And I got the talents from someone’s DNA😉 Love you!
This is such a well made video! I love the Grayson Highlands but have never seen it in the snow. So pretty seeing the ponies with snow on them.
Thanks so much for watching and for your kind words! This was definitely a once in a lifetime kind of trip, it was hard to believe what we were experiencing up there was real. Felt like a dream!
Great video. Some gorgeous scenery and views, well edited and your narration is fabulous. A very enjoyable watch.
Hey thanks so much for watching and for the kind words about the video! This was definitely one of my favorite backpacking trips and stories to share on my channel, so it means a lot to get those feelings confirmed by others, as well. Happy hiking!
Glad you did it man!!! I've done alot of sections of the knob and I know the struggles of that trail!!. I'm finally getting ready to tackle the whole thing in the fall!. Congrats again and order you the patch if you have lnt already!!
Hey thanks so much, both for watching my video and for the congratulations! It was a killer trail. I am trying to convince my buddies to do it to appreciate how difficult it truly is. I didn't realize they sold patches! I might have to get me one of those! Good luck to you this fall, you got this!
@BluegrassBackcountry thanks man and about that patch, you can go to the knobestone hiking trail association and think they are around 4 or 5 bucks. Not 100 on the price but under 10.
My sister and i r going at the end of june. How were the ticks? Cannyou suggest campsites? I looked on Alltrails and found nothing. Is this an out and back or a loop?
Thanks for watching! The ticks weren't great, if I am being honest. I would definitely get some permethrin to treat you clothes and bring deet, too. You can camp pretty much wherever as long as its a few hundred feet off the trail. The trail is flat enough across its 60 miles that shouldn't have trouble finding a spot. There weren't many "developed" spots from what I could remember. It's definitely remote and rugged! Hope you have a good time out there! This is a 60 mile one way route, so you would need two vehicles (one at each end).
Do you have a map or route of your trip that we can follow
You can access Dog Slaughter Falls by either taking the Sheltowee Trace/Moonbow Trail starting at the Cumberland Falls visitor center, or drive Forest Service Road #19 until you reach trailhead #414 (Dog Slaughter Creek). Trail #414 has had some issues with fires recently, so I would check to make sure it's open before attempting to go that way.
Seems like not many people thru hike that trail so there isn't much support or people to meet
It’s definitely less than say somewhere like the AT, but there are more R2R thru hikers than you may think! There are several R2R Facebook groups I follow and I see people finishing a thru hike quite often. Thanks for watching!
I enjoyed your narrative
Thanks so much for watching! I love Pine Mountain, it's my favorite area in Kentucky
The trail is not dangerous whatsoever. It is laddered the whole way up....😂edit...was one of funnest trails i been on though 😊
Seeing that several people have died while attempting to climb this mountain trail, I would say it does have some inherent danger, haha. Thanks for watching!
I would absolutely love to find a good group of hikers to enjoy this trip with
I hope you can find a group to do it with sometime! It was one of the best hiking experiences I’ve ever had, even though It was very difficult. Thanks for watching!
@BluegrassBackcountry yeah I watched the video you recommended and your a tough walker buddy lol it was a beautiful trail you did ..the river to river hasalways been on my bucket list
@@matthewlambert8789 thanks for taking the time to watch man! Yeah I pushed myself harder than I ever did on this trip. I’ve got another 170 mile trip planned for this fall in New Hampshire and I’ve got a lot of training to do before I can say I’m even close to the shape I was in for this River to River trip. Thanks again for tuning in! Be sure to subscribe to stay in touch!
I was just here this week, did the 24-mile hike, and seen over 20 snakes 1 being a timber rattle snake 🐍.. One of the most peaceful moments i had in illinois
Sounds like you had a great time! I returned to Shawnee to do the entire river to river trail as a thru hike and almost stepped on a rattler on the second to last day, it was terrifying! Link to the video is below if you’re interested in watching! ruclips.net/video/gEpB406cM3Y/видео.html
@BluegrassBackcountry absolutely it's a beautiful place to just absorb nature and all its beauty I'll definitely watch your video
Nice playing you guys!!
Thanks for watching!
Will be doing this exact trip in the middle of May. Parking at Garden of the gods and getting a shuttle to Lust Creek. Super excited! Thank you for sharing and providing a preview.
I hope you have a fabulous time! I bet the tree canopy will be vibrant with new life and lots of wildflowers to adorn your steps. Thanks for watching!
At 36:55 what waterfall is that?
Thanks for watching! I’m not 100% confident, but I think it might be called “Bork’s Falls”.
Beautiful❤
Thanks for watching! :)
This style of video is like a cup of tea for the heart and the mind. I appreciate all the tedious effort that went into camera placement, editing and music choice. I'm sure a hell of a lot more work goes into these than It feels like it's worth. But for me, now, here....I am grateful to you for it. Cheers
This was an incredibly kind and heartfelt comment to receive yesterday. Thanks for taking the time to watch and drop this line to me. I am tickled pink to know you enjoyed it and that it resonated with you. That is my goal with this channel, to bless and inspire others!
My son and I have gone to Grayson Highlands the last two years. We stayed at the Comfort Inn in Abingdon and walked to the same mexican restaurant you went to. At night they have a lady that does guacamole at your table. Last summer my son wanted to climb some rocks at the highlands when out of the blue two F15s come flying at 50 feet above us. Of course without any warning there were no pictures of the event. We live outside of Louisville.
Hey thanks so much for taking the time to watch and leave such a kind comment! I would love to go back and visit more fo the area, especially when the visibility is better without all the snowy fog. That Mexican restaurant was really good! I loved that they had an entire salsa bar for you to try. Now I need to go back to experience the guacamole lady ha! And hearing those planes overhead in the woods would be terrifying, especially that close to the surface.
I am pretty late to the party but I want to sincerely thank you for putting this into the world. Reverence is not something usually associated with adventurers seen online but I think it's something all naturalists feel, even if they are reluctant to talk about it. You've captured an echo of the magic to be experienced by being quiet in the presence of nature. Thank you.
Wow, this is one of the kindest and most articulate comments I have received from a viewer to date. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch my video and letting me know how it impacted you. I'm glad to hear that others in the world share the same sentiment regarding our time in wild places. Hope to see you tune in to some more of my adventures on my channel, I have a feeling you would like them :)
Iv dug clams for a long time...I can tell you, you do not want to squat and dig like this.. trust me your knees will thank you in the long run. With that out of the way. enjoy them clams!!!
We were only there for about an hour, but I would definitely agree with you that our knees would be shot if we were in that position all day. Thanks for watching!

Great video! So glad to see The Trail Tribe” back together for the first hike of 2024😊. Question ? Why is this called the German Ridge Trail🤔. Loved Chad’s rapping of James Joyce’s song 😅😅. Never a dull moment with Nick 😂😂. So glad you have such wonderful friends that you all love to explore the outdoors! You are blessed! Love you !
Thanks Mom! That’s a great question, I actually don’t know why it’s named that, other than the possibility of people in that area having German descent! 🙈Thankful to have my trail bros, they are a blessing! Love you!
Wonderful... Relaxing... Hilarious 😂 👍👍
Thanks brother, for the company and the blooper contributions!
Thomas Knob Shelter is an awesome place to be in Winter. The wind there can reach Hurricane force sometimes.
